How my grandpa taught me to be rich

Tags Gratitude Kindness

Nataly and grandpaLast week I spent the morning at the hospital with my 94 year-old grandpa and learned how to become rich:

My grandpa had severe pain in his leg and we waited to see the doctor. He told me he didn’t sleep all night from the pain — when the nurse asked, he said it was 10 out of 10.

Now, you have to know that this is so rare for him to admit to having pain.

He has been through two wars, every life trial, including coming to the US as a refugee with us when he was 64 and starting a life from scratch.

And yet he never complains, ever, and often when it’s obvious that something hurts, doesn’t tell us. So his pain must have been really awful.

After a while the doctor came in and as he examined my grandpa’s leg, my grandpa told him with a smile:

“I am so rich, doctor! This is my granddaughter here and I also have a great-granddaughter who is 15! I am a rich man!”

I have goosebumps writing this. There he was, in so much pain, after a sleepless night, telling the doctor how rich he was because he had us as his family.

I was grateful to be able to help my grandpa in a small way - my parents were away and it’s they who take care of my him most of the time.

And I got a huge gift of an amazing, most pure life reminder about what really matters and what makes us rich.

I am in awe of my grandpa and so grateful he reminded me about just how incredibly rich I am, too.

Next up: This is the absolute best way to deal with stress. Seriously.
